Gibuzale Washing Station
Gibuzale, Swahili for 'where farmers bring cherries to sell' is part of an Arabica-focused area on the slopes of Mt. Elgon, an inactive volcano in Eastern Uganda on the Kenyan border. Small producers bring their cherries to the remote Gibuzale Washing Station, where day lots are traceable down to the individual farmer. When deliveries range from 3 to 30 kgs of cherries, this is no easy task!
Coffee on Mount Elgon is hand-picked due to the small farm sizes, mountainous terrain, and long harvesting seasons. The climate has traditionally been predominantly rainy during the harvesting months; however, a changing climate is bringing less rain and higher temperatures, making the choice of drought-resistant varietals a positive one for economic longevity in this developing coffee nation. In areas with rainfall occurring throughout the drying period, farmers will often use raised African beds, which generally results in more even drying and a superior quality finished product.
We found this lot to have great complexity and balance with a delightful mouthfeel - perfect for our first offering from this up-and-comer in the specialty coffee arena.
We ship freshly roasted coffee Monday - Friday and aim to dispatch within 48 hours. Orders placed after midday Wednesday may not ship until the following week.
